Cinco de Mayo is rapidly approaching and you may have forgotten all about this holiday! Many people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's "Independence Day," but it isn't! Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5th, commemorating the battle the Mexicans won over France in Puebla. The Mexicans were severely outnumbered but still managed to win the battle. Ever since then, the battle win has been celebrated. Surprisingly, Cinco de Mayo is more common in the U.S., with only Puebla celebrating it in Mexico. I have put together some of my favorite Cinco de Mayo Activities into a bundle to teach students all about Cinco de Mayo while having fun (and some food, too!). Are you looking for fun Cinco de Mayo Activities to celebrate the holiday? My Cinco de Mayo Virtual Field Trip bundle has everything you need to celebrate the holiday with your class! This bundle comes with a virtual field trip powerpoint, crown crafts, math color by code, writing prompts with toppers, crafts + more!
My favorite part of this bundle is the powerpoint, which transports students to Mexico to learn all about Cinco de Mayo! Now, this is where it gets fun. It is not necessary, but I suggest transforming your classroom into an airplane! It makes the experience feel real and makes it fun for students! Suggestions on this room transformation include:
create airplane seats with the desks and/or chairs (think of how you would be sitting in an airplane)
dress up as a flight attendant or pilot
have snacks and drinks ready for the flight
prepare student passports, tickets, and ID badges before the day
bring in chips and dips for students to snack on later in the trip
For this room transformation, you don't have to go big! It isn't necessary to cover all 4 walls with contact paper and create airplane-themed items to hang up. Simple things, like the ones listed above, will take this activity above and beyond. Students will be having so much fun that I guarantee they won't care about the classroom looking normal.
The powerpoint starts out with a few airport slides - sitting with your baggage, checking your baggage, and giving your ticket at the "gate." Then, we get on the plane (in our seats) and we have some airplane ambiance (view of the inside of the plane with white noise). Students can now get their snack and drink and you can have them work on their crown crafts during the "flight." After we "land" in Mexico, we explore Mexico, learn about the history of Cinco de Mayo, do some crafts, taste food (chips and dip), and finally, learn a little more about Mexico and the Mayans.
If you've never done a virtual field trip before, don't worry - I have included everything that you need and added some ideas in the notes section of the powerpoint. I guarantee you your students will be begging for more virtual field trips! Click HERE to get the virtual field trip bundle.
Enjoy & happy teaching!
